Professor Joshua D. Zimmerman, Eli and Diana Zborowski Professorial Chair in Holocaust Studies and East European Jewish History, recently published an op-ed exploring the history of Ukraineās path to independence thirty-one years ago and how it reinforces Ukraineās current resolve for freedom. Zimmerman highlights at the time of Ukraineās independence referendum in December of 1991, over 90 percent of ballot castors favored separation from the Soviet Union. In the piece, Zimmerman argues that Putin has ignored the historic plurality of Ukrainianās nationalistic sentiment and identity in his justification for Russia's unprovoked war and illegal land grab. The article goes on to cite a historical case study which argues that Hitlerās annexation of Czechoslovakia mirrors Putinās false territorial claims on Crimea and other areas of the Donbas.
